NAPAC Feather Ceremony

Saint Peter Public School’s Native American Parent Advisory Committee (NAPAC) sponsored an Indian Education Feather Ceremony on May 10th to honor upcoming graduate Leah Zarn (White Earth Ojibwe) and 8th grader Cayden Secatero (Navajo-Dine).

A Feather Ceremony is a tradition in Native American culture that honors a graduating high school student for their accomplishments and offers a blessing as they transition into the next phase of their life. Our graduate received a star quilt that was wrapped around her by our Native American Liaison Charmayne Klah and SPPS NAPAC Chairperson Beth Man, as well as a feather that was tied in her hair signifying her accomplishments.

Saint Peter Schools’ Native American Cultural Liaison led the ceremony, and entertainment was provided by Ogima Binese with his Hoop Dance and a Native American flute performance by Kayden Jackson, while the guest speaker was Joe Big Bear. This was the second time the local NAPAC has held a feather ceremony with the first one taking place in 2022.
