First-grade students at South Elementary received a special gift on January 31 thanks to a partnership between United Way and Capstone. Each student was given a copy of The Kindness Booth, written by Laura K. Murray and illustrated by Andreana Boatta, as part of a literacy and character-building initiative.
Representatives Karli Swearingen and Emily Schanbacher from United Way visited the school library to read the book aloud, engage students in discussions about spreading kindness, and distribute copies for students to take home. Nick Sykora, Director of Distribution Sales at Capstone, also joined the event, sharing insights about his company’s role in providing books for schools and libraries.
Students were especially excited to learn that the book’s illustrator included numerous dinosaur illustrations—a fun nod to the character Oliver’s love for dinosaurs.
“We are grateful for the generosity of United Way and Capstone in making this experience possible,” said South Elementary Principal Jana Sykora. “Promoting kindness and literacy together is a meaningful way to support our students and build a strong school community.”
This collaboration highlights the power of partnerships in fostering a love of reading and encouraging young learners to embrace kindness in their daily lives. Here are some photo highlights from the presentation and reading.
