North Elementary physical education students are in the midst of their annual golf unit under the tutelage of Dave Torbenson, Mankato Golf Club’s general manager/director of golf. All of the equipment used during the golf unit (with the exception of Golf-zilla, the giant inflatable mascot) was purchased in 2023 by North using grant funds the school received at that time from the Play Golf Minnesota program.
Torbenson is on hand this week and next week to work with the children on learning about the rules and regulations of golf, the skills for playing the sport, and how to use the equipment properly. The equipment used included kids-sized plastic golf clubs, rubber golf balls, as well as targets and pins for use by each class.
“This is one activity that our students get extremely excited for. Not only does “golf-zilla make his annual appearance, but I feel that golf is an awesome lifetime activity that kids can grasp on to, and carry with them for a long time.” Kent Bass, North physical education instructor, said. “We’re extremely lucky to get to use Dave Torbenson’s expertise. He’s a fantastic promoter of the game, especially at the youth level.”
