Senior English and Minnesota State Univerisity-Mankato English students in Peggy Dimock’s classes at Saint Peter High School have been recognized recently for being included in the New York Times’ current event conversation forums. Those forums where her students were recognized included:
* FORUM 1 - All of her students submitted responses for a New York Times current events conversation series (Teenagers Tell Us About Their Relationship With News) and five of them had their submissions included in an online story about the series.
Nearly 400 students from around the U.S. wrote about where they get the news, how they navigate it — and why they think adults are more likely to fall for misinformation than they are. Those SPHS students whose responses were published included Dayne Tollefson, Adan Marchan-Ellefson, Gretta Baker, Emily Sustaita, and Sophia Christensen.
“Out of nearly 400 entries, their work stood out, and being featured in such a prestigious space is truly a remarkable achievement,” Dimock said. “Their insight and connection to the news bring such valuable perspective to the discussion.”

* FORUM 2 - Each of her Senior English and MSU English students also took part in an earlier New York Times online forum where the theme revolved around “How Does Your Identity Inform Your Political Beliefs and Values?” There were more than 1,500 submissions for this forum and five more SPHS students had their responses included in the online story were Addison Landsom, Braedon Dornfeld, Julian Perez, Evan Walter, and Lola Pell.
According to the New York Times, “Being published is the ‘winning’ for these forums. This isn’t a traditional contest, and we won’t be announcing ‘winners.’ Instead, we plan on featuring some of our favorite comments and conversations in our weekly Current Events Conversations this fall.”
