SPHS culinary arts bake sale

Courtney Shoemaker’s Baking and Pastries class at Saint Peter High School recently hosted a school-wide bake sale, where they distributed dozens of homemade baked goods, including beignets, cupcakes, and a variety of different types of breads. This year marks the first time Shoemaker’s class has hosted a bake sale for their fellow students, and it was undoubtedly a sweet success!

On January 15th, students and staff across Saint Peter High School were given fake “culinary cash” to purchase baked goods from their peers. This event served as an opportunity for students to showcase their newfound culinary skills while creatively implementing business strategies learned in class.

For Shoemaker, it was imperative that her students experience all aspects of the event planning process. In doing so, students were responsible for selecting a baked good to produce, calculating an expense plan, and designing marketing materials – including logos, posters, and even nutrition labels – for their product.

This entire process required teamwork, time management, responsibility, and more than a dash of creativity.

“It’s fun to see how creative and prideful students are about the work they are doing,” Shoemaker said. “I hope they have fun and learn that the more work they put into this, the more they will get out of it.”

Certainly, this exercise will go down in SPHS history as one of the sweetest homework assignments ever!
