New Saint Peter High School special education teacher Heather Bakke is featured in a new Education Minnesota social media campaign to showcase current teachers’ thoughts about heading back to school for the 2022-23 school year. “Every year Education Minnesota interviews different teachers from all over the state to get their ideas about heading back to school,” Bakke, who comes to SPHS after teaching previously at Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop, said. “They reached out to me because a few years ago I took part in their Racial Equity Advocate program. Education Minnesota elects three teacher members to serve on the board of directors of the National Education Association and I'm one of those three teachers. I'm also on the Education Minnesota Governing Board and I’m just starting my last three-year term. (In her interview Heather referred to the Saints Nation tagline of ‘Everyone Belongs,’ promoting inclusion for all.)
“Being on the NEA Board of Directors means that I visit Washington D.C. three times a year to lobby our U.S. Senators Amy Klobuchar and Tina Smith, as well as the office of Minnesota’s 1st Congressional District (currently occupied by 1st District U.S. Rep. Brad Finstad). During our time in D.C., we lobby about education issues, trying to improve federal funding for schools.”
