Members of the soprano and alto sections with the Saint Peter High School and Middle School choirs (grades 7-12) came together on Thursday, April 13, to take part in the first-ever Treble Festival Day. A group from New Prague High School also attended the festival.
“My college choir director, Dr. Angela Kasper, who used to be at the University of St. Thomas (St. Paul) and is now teaching at Western Washington University,” Bri Bergstrom, SPHS Choir director, said. “We started the day in the choir room learning a super cool piece from the Republic of Georgia. Then we went into the theater and worked on two songs, ‘Does the World Say’ by Kyle Pederson and ‘Letter from a Girl to the World’ by Andrea Ramsey. Both songs have lyrics that really focus on the insecurities many women feel and our hopes/dreams/wants for our future.”
According to Bergstrom, the students all came together to fill out the spoken part at the end of the Ramsey piece and these were their wants:
- I want my personality to be embraced.
- I want the world to recognize my inner beauty and not just my outer appearance.
- I want to be heard.
- I want to be respected as a person, not an object.
- I want to be as successful as any man in my work.
- I want to live in a world without judgement.
- I want to be confident.
- I want to live in the future, not the past.
- I want the world to stop holding me back from my dreams.
